Position Title: Director of Adaptive Recreation & Sports
Department: Adaptive Recreation
Reports to: Chief Program Officer
Job Classification: Exempt/Full-time/Salary
Job Summary: To ensure adaptive recreation and sports of The Center further the achievement of the organization’s mission, purpose and goals and are congruent with the values of the agency; to ensure programs and services meet quality standards established by leadership and regulatory agencies; to ensure program and service planning and development occur to anticipate emerging needs of people with physical challenges; and to manage and develop a strong, effective and collaborative team committed to the mission, values and goals of The Center.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Design and implement a high-quality, high-interest program curriculum that provides instruction for members within adaptive recreation and adaptive sport components. Ensure programs offer opportunities for skill development and exploration of interests, and encourage practice of individual skills in recreation/leisure and sport involvement toward goals of physical and psychosocial wellness that assists to enhance the quality of their lives.
- Oversee, manage and provide opportunities for career growth for assigned staff.
- Adapt curriculum offerings to ensure members of all ages and level of ability/disability can enrich their
lives, improve their independent functioning, and participate in community life to the greatest extent
possible. - Work cross-collaboratively with directors across the organization.
- Coordinate the scheduling and supervision of program staff in the various program areas to ensure the
delivery of quality services and adequate coverage. - Ensure Implementation of agency policies and program protocols within programs.
- Administer programs within established budgets.
- Demonstrate professional behavior in working cooperatively as part of a team, initiating ongoing
professional learning and skill enhancement, generating ideas for new and enhanced programming, and
maintaining client confidentiality. - Participate in fundraising and agency public relations as available and requested.
- In collaboration with the Chief Program Officer, develop mechanisms for on-going program
development incorporating current research, use of adaptive technology, and learning models to ensure
The Center continues to meet emerging community needs for people with physical challenges. - Supervise members, caregivers and volunteers in all program areas. Provide communication and
assistance as needed for identified concerns. Communicate concerns to the Director of Member
Services. - Develop and maintain professional affiliations and relationships in the community that support The
Center’s mission. - Assist with the ongoing internal and external community relations program to maintain ties with
potential volunteers and organizations. - Accept a flexible work schedule requiring evening and weekend hours.
- Be willing to assist in other areas as needed and available
Minimum Required Skills/Abilities:
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification
- Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
- Have computer skills for charting, tracking outcomes, checking emails, and utilizing the computer as
necessary for work purposes. - Interest, abilities, and certifications required to support staff and coverage of assigned program areas
- Effective communication skills
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
- Bilingual
- Ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language
Required Education/Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field
- No less than two years’ experience working with individuals with physical challenges
- National Certification and Oklahoma Licensure in Recreational Therapy.
Preferred Education/Experience:
- Two years’ experience/skill development in a supervisory role
Physical Requirements:
- Demonstrate stamina to tolerate an active 8-hour day and extended hours as needed.
- Be able to respond and assist in emergency situations, including fires, falls, spills, etc.
- Lift and move up to 30 lbs. to manage and maneuver supplies and equipment.
